The everything board / The Hole 8
« Last post by EverJack on October 01, 2014, 07:33:49 AM »
As Lukey ran to his home next door, Ricky looked down at me.  "You was just joshin' Lukey, wasn't ya?  That ain't no more a Injun chief's chicken bone than I am a Injun chief."

I stuck the shovel in the ground.  "We don't know that.  It was deep an' gotta be pretty old.  Whoever owned the chicken's prob'ly long dead now.  It coulda just as soon been a chief as anybody else that owned it.  Let Lukey have a dream or two to think about.  It ain't hurtin' you or nobody else."

Ricky knew I was serious.  He shrugged and hopped down in the hole as his brother climbed out.  "I ain't figgerin' to kid him 'bout it, but I hope we find somethin' else besides somebody's Sunday dinner."

I laughed and started digging again.

Thirty minutes later, and almost four feet deep, I looked up out of the hole.

"We might as well stop for the day.  We ain't hit anything since that chicken bone.  We can dig some more tomorrow an' then decide what to do."

Mike pulled himself out, then helped his brother.  Ricky stood there looking down into the hole.  "A pretty nice hole, if I say so myself."

Mike grinned.  "You got dirt 'round your eye.  Looks like I poked ya in it."

Ricky brought his bare arm up to his eye and wiped at it.  "I oughta leave it there and tell ma you blacked it.  I'd get back at ya fer all them shoulder whacks you been givin' me."

I laughed and picked up my shovel.  "Why don't you guys go home an' take a bath an' eat dinner.  Then we can meet back over at Lukey's place.  We can see what he did with his bone an' maybe play some monopoly or somehin'."

Ricky grumbled.  "He better have found out somethin' good.  He was gone long enough."

Mike put a shovel over his shoulder and headed toward the front yard.  "Let's go, squirt.  I'm hungry enough to eat a horse."

Ricky laughed and ran by his brother.  "If I had a horse, I'd tell it to skeedaddle 'fore you started chasin' it with a knife an' fork."

I grinned as I leaned my shovel beside the back door and went in.

An hour and a half later, I stepped out onto the front porch.  Travis, his sister, and mother were sitting on their big, covered front porch as they usually did on a summer evening.  Stella (their mother) was playing her guitar.

Travis saw me and he was grinning.  "Did ya find a rooster to go with that hen y'all found?"

I laughed.  "Might've been a rooster for all I know."

Deana stuck her finger to her mouth and pretended to gag.  "I'd hate to waste all that energy digging a hole and not find anything in it but an old chicken skeleton."

I smiled.  I could smell her perfume from my front porch.  "It's just somethin' to do, but can't ever tell.  We might find somethin' good."

She sighed.  "Oh well.  Whatever floats your boat, I guess."

I walked over to our north fence and looked up at Lukey's upstairs window.  Then I picked up a small rock and threw it at the side of the house a few feet from the window.  Mike raised the window and peered out.

"We still got a seat for the Monopoly game if ya want in.  Me an' Ricky just got here."

"I'm comin'.  You can go ahead an' divvy up the money, but don't cheat me.  I can count, ya know."  I winked as I walked around and went in.

Oh, do take care of yourself!  I've just finished my latest review (in Spanish) for El Sol Latino so that occupied my writing time;  then I had to got ready for the book club I'm in charge of (I invited the author to join us!);  garden beds here and at the church are being readied for the winter months;  window washing is next on the  agenda...so many things have distracted me from my fiction writing.  but I will get back to it.  Hope you're well again soon Ed.  Cathleen

I know it's not close to as good of a reason for you, Ian, or Cathleen not writing for a few days, but I've had a chest cold.  I should be over it in a couple of days and will post more to my story.  I just haven't been able to concentrate on it.

I wondered what Jean read on the poster but I gather it was for the talent show competition they plan to enter later.  Yet, I can't help but feel the show has something to do with the upcoming plot.

Your descriptions are wonderful...they cast the romantic spell.

A good, romantic interlude to the plot, Ian.
