a poem that someone asked me to write!
« on: March 30, 2013, 05:21:03 AM »
I call it:  I am an American Warrior,

I am an American Warrior, Born into a world at war
It was with that first heartbeat, I knew freedom is never free
I live to protect and defend those in need of help
I stand alone or with others proud and boundless
My spirit cannot be broken, my honor and duty never shamed
I battle for what I believe with respect for humanity
While my heart beats, I pledge to take a stand
For all that is right, for liberty and justice

I am an American Warrior, and while this heart beats,
I vow to speak up for the oppressed and exploited
I vow to ease the suffering of those in anguish
I vow to bring company to the lonely
I vow to comfort those in profound sadness
I vow to protect the vulnerable and defenseless
or to simply take a knee and say a prayer

For I am an American Warrior
Challenged by tyrants that mean to harm me
I will breathe my finest hour unconditionally
For those who need me Iím always there
Fighting any odds without fear or trepidation
By gun by knife or by hand, a dragon released
Who if needed can scorch the earth
Iím an American Warrior do not attempt to vanquish me

Jim
I wonder at the meaning of the end of this.

This stirred me! And usually generic sentiments don't really reach me.  Maybe because I know you and can imagine you saying this.  This line was especially powerful after all the earlier verses of that stanza:  or to simply take a knee and say a prayer

The first two stanzas really read well but the last reads a little awkwardly.  Read it aloud and see if your tongue stumbles over words or rhythm.

I will breathe my finest hour unconditionally.  I don't know whether I dislike that line or love it.  I know it makes me think.

You have me curious...who asked you to write this or for what occasion.  (Yeah, I'm nosey.)  Cathleen

It was a UMas grad student that was doing research on Vietnam vets -- returning Vietnam Vets had a day decicated to them.  A bit late but still appreciated.  He asked some very ignorant questions and I took it apon myself to "educate" him.  No, I didn't beat him up - years ago I would have slapped him around a bit.  I calmly pointed out the errors in his beliefs.

I think he wants to use this in his study.  I'vw sent it off to a few contests and the VFW magazine.... maybe they will print it.
